Entry No. 16 — the Boise file — filed under: offbeat-museum
Idaho Museum of Mining & Geology
A small, volunteer-run, free-admission museum tucked into the Old Penitentiary district and devoted entirely to Idaho's rocks and mining past. Exhibits include a recreated mining camp, ore cars, and a mine elevator alongside cases of minerals and displays on the state's geologic features. It keeps tiny hours (essentially Friday through Sunday afternoons), which is part of why most Boiseans have never set foot inside.
The move: Drop in on a weekend afternoon to geek out over fluorescent minerals, then walk the adjacent Botanical Garden together.
