Ringing Rocks of Montana
This boulder pile on BLM land does something rocks aren't supposed to do: tap the right stones with a hammer and they ring like bells with clear metallic tones. Geologists still can't fully explain it, but the leading idea ties the chime to the dense, weathering-resistant rock and the way the boulders are jointed and wedged against each other. The weird part: pull a rock out of the pile and it goes dead silent. The final stretch is rough gravel that wants a high-clearance vehicle, and there's no fee. Bring your own hammer.
The move: Bring a hammer and take turns hunting for the boulders that actually chime, making your own music out of a rock pile in the middle of nowhere.
