Madison Buffalo Jump State Park

A high limestone cliff that Native peoples used for nearly 2,000 years to stampede entire bison herds over the edge, ending only about 200 years ago. Standing at the rim or below the pishkun, the place carries an eerie weight that few visitors expect from a quiet, empty grassland park. Interpretive kiosks explain the hunting drive lines while hawks ride the thermals off the cliff face. It's almost always nearly deserted, which deepens the strangeness.

The move: Hike the Rim Trail at golden hour to stand atop the buffalo jump cliff and feel the weight of 2,000 years of history over the empty valley.

📍 Before you go Open daylight hours year-round, no entrance fee; little shade and almost no facilities, so bring water.
