Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park

One of the largest limestone caverns in the Northwest, toured only on a guided two-mile underground walk through chambers of stalactites, stalagmites, and rare twisting helictites. The caves were dissolved over hundreds of millions of years out of tilted Madison Limestone, and the route involves over 500 stairs down and a slide-through passage at one point. It stays chilly underground even in midsummer, a strange cool world beneath the dry Montana hills.

The move: Book a summer guided cave tour and wind two miles underground together through twisting limestone rooms kept perpetually cool and dim.

📍 Before you go Cave tours run roughly May through September only and are physically demanding (500+ stairs); reserve tickets ahead in peak season.
