This spiritual bookstore has held down 483 Elmwood for decades — about eighteen years under founder Sandy St. Louis, whose shelving came secondhand from the defunct East West Books, until a young regular named Claire bought the place in 2015 rather than watch it retire with its owner. The stock ranges Buddhist to Christian to Native American, filled out with crystals, tarot decks, incense, and work from local artists. It doubles as a reading parlor: tarot, psychic, palm, and astrology practitioners take sitters during shop hours, and workshops run through the year. Open until 7, Tuesday through Saturday, it survives as one of Elmwood Village's last genuinely strange storefronts.

The story
Sandy St. Louis opened Inspiration Point at 483 Elmwood, near Hodge, in 1997, carrying over fixtures from East West Books, where she had worked before it closed, and ran it roughly eighteen years. In 2015 a young Buffalo native named Claire — a waitress who had read poetry at Rust Belt Books and had told St. Louis she wanted the store — bought it. It changed hands again in September 2022, to Isabelle Fritz, a six-year customer and workshop regular who had been a chemist and then, for thirty years, an occupational therapist in Buffalo's Catholic Health system. A mother of six, she calls buying the shop a calling rather than a business plan.
The stock spans more traditions than the storefront suggests — Buddhist, Christian and Native American material alongside Indian and Chinese philosophy — plus crystals, candles, mala beads, rosaries, incense, tarot decks and statuary. The entire back room is given over to local vendors and artists. There is also a Cozy Corner: free tea, a community journal anyone can write in, a deck of Message from the Universe cards to pull from, and books you are meant to sit with before deciding whether to buy them.
The readers make it a parlor as much as a shop. Laurynne Casey reads cards, tarot and runes on Thursdays at $25 per fifteen minutes, with a thirty-minute minimum for entity work. Jessica Smith reads tarot and oracle and teaches Reiki; Aidalicia Morales works as psychic, medium and Reiki master teacher; Rev. Ellen Bourn — medium, medical intuitive, and a past president of the Lily Dale Assembly — summers up at Lily Dale. Workshops run year-round on astrology, tarot, poetry and Buffalo's spiritual history, and the shop belongs to the Mid-Elmwood merchants group behind the Ignite The Light solstice event of December 2024.
What it's like
Metered street parking on Elmwood, then a calm room with the music low and phone calls quietly discouraged — people do sit and read here, and the staff would like it to stay that way. Take the tea. Ask at the counter who is in, because the answer changes daily and is the difference between an errand and an evening; Thursday is the dependable day if you want a walk-in card reading. Work back through the shelves to the vendor room, where the local artists' work lives and the stock turns over fastest. Closing is 7pm sharp Tuesday through Saturday, which leaves the rest of the Elmwood strip open for dinner and the argument about whose reading was more accurate.

No. The stock is deliberately cross-tradition — Buddhist, Christian, Native American, Indian and Chinese philosophy — and a large share of it is books. You can treat the whole visit as a bookstore run and nobody will stop you.
Anything seasonal worth timing around?
The Cozy Corner comes into its own in cold weather, when the free tea stops being decorative. The Mid-Elmwood merchants also run neighborhood events — the first was Ignite The Light on the winter solstice, December 21, 2024 — announced through the shop's Facebook page.
