Entry No. 5 — the Butte file — filed under: haunted
Old Butte Historical Adventures - City Underground Tour
Local historians lead you beneath the Uptown sidewalks into the Prohibition-era Rookwood Speakeasy, walled off and forgotten until it was rediscovered by accident in 2004, and through the 1890 City Jail that stayed in use until 1971. The jail's holding cells are where Evel Knievel reputedly got his nickname, and the dim, buried rooms carry their own catalog of dark history and reported encounters. Tours are run by a preservation group that has been opening these spaces since 2004.
The move: Take the late-morning City Underground tour, then surface for coffee on Main and trade your favorite buried-room detail.
📍 Before you go Summer tours run Mon-Sat at 10am, noon, and 2pm with reservations; winter is by appointment only. Call 406-498-3424.
