Entry No. 29 — the Butte file — filed under: history
Rookwood Speakeasy
Sealed and forgotten since Prohibition, this basement speakeasy was rediscovered in 2004 when renovators found a closet of decades-old coats hiding a two-way mirror that opened into the room. Frozen in time, it still has terrazzo floors, stained-glass skylights, carved hardwood moldings, and griffins worked into the ceiling, with 1920s artifacts down to a 'Hoover for President' button. It's reached only on Old Butte Historical Adventures' City Underground walking tour, not as a walk-in bar.
The move: Take the underground tour to step through the hidden mirror-door into a Prohibition speakeasy left exactly as it was abandoned.
📍 Before you go Access by Old Butte Historical Adventures tour only; summer tours Mon-Sat at 10am/12pm/2pm, winter by appointment. It's a preserved historic site, not a serving bar.
