Entry No. 4 — the Charleston file — filed under: speakeasy
Bar Vauté (beneath Brasserie La Banque)
Descend the original historic staircase of a former bank at the corner of Broad and East Bay and you land in what the restaurant itself calls a "bar clandestin" — one of the only true below-street-level bars in Charleston, lit by Art Deco sconces with a subterranean, secluded feel most tourists walking Rainbow Row never notice exists.
The move: Split a French crepe and a bottle of Champagne underground during weeknight Apéro Hour (4-6pm) — no reservation needed — then climb back up into Brasserie La Banque for dinner in the same historic bank building.
