Dickeyville Grotto — Roadside & Outdoor Oddities in Chicago

Entry No. 69 — the Chicago file — filed under: roadside-oddity

Dickeyville Grotto

Between 1924 and 1930 Father Mathias Wernerus encrusted an entire churchyard in broken glass, seashells, colorful stone, and the cut-off tops of perfume bottles, building grottoes, arches, and fountains dedicated to both God and country. The shrines honor an unlikely mix of Jesus, Mary, Christopher Columbus, George Washington, and Abraham Lincoln. It went on to inspire a cluster of other found-object grottoes across Wisconsin.

The move: Slowly circle the glittering grotto together, spotting the bits of perfume bottle and seashell pressed into every surface, and leave a donation on your way out.
