The Spindle (Car Kebab) at Paisan's — Roadside & Outdoor Oddities in Chicago

Entry No. 31 — the Chicago file — filed under: roadside-oddity

The Spindle (Car Kebab) at Paisan's

The original 50-foot "Spindle" that impaled eight cars on a spike in a Berwyn parking lot was torn down in 2008 for a Walgreens, but in 2022 local artist Pete Gamen built a 23-foot homage in the lot of Paisan's Pizzeria and Bar. Fiberglass go-karts are skewered on a central pole along Historic Route 66, a scrappy tribute to the lost icon that famously appeared in Wayne's World. It was funded by a Route 66-related state grant ahead of the highway's 2026 centennial.

The move: Split a pizza at Paisan's, then step into the parking lot to gawk at the skewered go-karts and trade Wayne's World quotes.

📍 Before you go It sits in the working parking lot of Paisan's Pizzeria; the original Cermak Plaza Spindle is gone, this is the recreation.
