Skylabs
A vintage hi-fi temple tucked into Historic Valley Junction that reimagines stereo shopping from the golden era of analog: they buy, sell, trade and repair vintage audio gear alongside vinyl and new turntables. Owner Kevin Moll has turned it into a cult YouTube destination, but in person it's a hushed, gear-nerd wonderland most passersby walk right past.
The move: Ask to A/B listen to the same record on two different vintage setups and argue about which one sounds warmer — then go find that record across the street in the Junction.
📍 Before you go Skylabs sits on 5th Street, the spine of Historic Valley Junction — West Des Moines' oldest commercial district and a walkable strip of brick storefronts, antique dealers, record shops, and restaurants. It's easy to stroll right past, so scan the row rather than expecting flashy signage, and slow down once inside: this is a quiet browse-and-listen space, not a quick stop, so be ready to chat gear. Street parking runs along 5th and the side streets. Hours are limited and daytime-focused with early-week closures, so aim for a weekday afternoon or Saturday. The Junction's seasonal farmers market, cafes, and crossing-the-street record digs make easy pairings just steps away.
