Entry No. 17 — the Durango file — filed under: soak
Piedra River Hot Springs
“The source runs scalding, the river runs snowmelt, and you sit in the negotiation between them.”
Pagosa Springs charges resort prices to soak in the world's deepest hot spring. A half hour west, the same geothermal water seeps out of the Piedra River's bank for free — you just earn it with a 1.5-mile hike down Sheep Creek Trail. Soakers stack river rocks into a shifting set of pools, dialing the temperature by letting in more or less cold river. The source runs scalding, the river runs snowmelt, and you sit in the negotiation between them. Clothing is, let's say, optional.
The move: Hike in on a weekday morning with a thermos and dry socks, claim the pool nearest the source, and rebuild its rock wall together until the mix hits perfect.
📍 Before you go The turn onto First Fork Road (FSR 622) is off US 160 about 22 miles west of Pagosa Springs, just past the Chimney Rock turnoff; the dirt road runs 6.5 miles to the Sheep Creek Trailhead and is fine for a regular car when dry, but it is gated closed in winter and usually opens in late spring. The trail descends to the river — gradual, then steep in the middle — so save energy for the climb out. During peak runoff the river swells and drowns the pools; late July through October is the dependable window. No facilities of any kind, so pack out everything and expect some soakers without swimsuits.
