Entry No. 19 — the Helena file — filed under: roadside-oddity
The Bullwhacker Statue
Mid-stride on the Last Chance Gulch pedestrian mall, a bronze man cracks a whip over invisible oxen. Sculpted by John B. Weaver, it honors the bullwhackers who cursed and whip-cracked stubborn ox teams hauling freight from Fort Benton down the Mullan Road to Helena's gold camps. It's an oddly specific, action-frozen monument to a forgotten profession, right in the heart of the walkable downtown gulch.
The move: Grab coffee and stroll Last Chance Gulch, mimicking the whip-crack pose for a photo before browsing the historic storefronts.
