Entry No. 10 — the Indianapolis file — filed under: cemeteries
Grave of John Dillinger (Crown Hill Cemetery)
Entombed beneath multiple tons of reinforced concrete and iron bars in Section 44 to prevent ghoulish body snatching, notorious Depression-era bank robber John Dillinger rests in the nation's third-largest cemetery. Visitors still leave coins and trinkets on his chipped headstone, which has been replaced several times due to souvenir seekers hacking off pieces.
The move: Follow Crown Hill's self-guided tour map to Section 44 to find Dillinger's slab, then hike up to James Whitcomb Riley's grave atop 'The Crown' for a panoramic view of the downtown skyline.
