Entry No. 33 — the Los Angeles file — filed under: witchy
Self-Realization Fellowship Lake Shrine
A 2.5-acre spring-fed lake — the only one in the City of L.A. — sits a few blocks from the ocean on 10 acres of gardens, ringed by waterfalls, fern grottos, koi ponds, and white swans, with a Dutch windmill repurposed as a chapel. The grounds' centerpiece is a thousand-year-old Chinese stone sarcophagus holding a portion of Mahatma Gandhi's ashes in a brass and silver coffer. The 2025 Palisades Fire burned right up to the property, but the gardens and structures survived; the meditation gardens reopened to the public in August 2025 (free advance reservation required).
The move: Stroll the lakeside loop slowly, feed nothing but your curiosity, and sit by the Gandhi memorial windmill watching the swans drift.
📍 Before you go Reopened after the 2025 Palisades Fire; hours can be limited and reservations may be required. Check the official site before visiting, and dress respectfully as it is an active spiritual site.
