Upper Newport Bay Moonlight & Bioluminescence Kayak Paddle
Guided night paddles launch from the Newport Aquatic Center after a short safety and instruction briefing, gliding out across the calm, protected waters of Upper Newport Bay's Back Bay. On moonlit "Moonlight Kayaking" tours you trace the bird estuary in the dark and continue toward Balboa Island, beaching for a Balboa Bar or frozen banana before the return paddle, with little lights flickering on each kayak. When conditions align around the new moon, dinoflagellates can make the water glow blue-green with every stroke. Because the bioluminescence depends entirely on nature, glow paddles are offered only on the occasional nights when an active bloom is confirmed.
The move: Book a night paddle, push off into the dark bay together, and watch your paddle strokes light up the water if the glow shows.
📍 Before you go Reservation/tour-only and weather-dependent; moonlight paddles run on a schedule but true bioluminescence glow tours are announced ad hoc when conditions are right. Newport Beach is near the 25-mile edge from central L.A.
