Entry No. 7 — the Miami file — filed under: giant sculpture

Miami Mountain

Five boulders — real stone, stacked over 40 feet high and painted in blaring fluorescent pink, yellow, and blue — balance improbably behind the Bass Museum like a cartoon cairn dropped from orbit. Ugo Rondinone modeled it on hoodoo rock formations from the North American Badlands, then had it professionally painted like a piece of candy.

The move: Stand under it at sunset when the fluorescent paint seems to glow, then walk two blocks to the beach and see if you can spot the tower of color from the sand.
