Entry No. 30 — the Miami file — filed under: banya
Russian and Turkish Baths Miami Beach
A 15-ton pile of volcanic rock gets roasted in a 200-degree Russian room while a platza attendant flogs regulars with soaked oak-leaf branches (venik) before they drop into a 34-degree plunge pool — the whole ritual is a satellite of the East Village institution that's been running since 1892, and it actually closed for a stretch post-pandemic before reopening.
The move: Book a couples platza session (the venik beating is the whole point), alternate the Finnish sauna and the cold plunge three times each, then split a plate of herring and pickles at the on-site Russian restaurant in robes.
