Entry No. 4 — the New Orleans file — filed under: witchy
Bottom of the Cup Tearoom
Established in 1929 and run by four generations of the same family, this bills itself as the oldest tearoom in the country. Serving tea was originally a cover for fortune-telling, which was illegal at the time, so customers paid for a sandwich and got their reading 'gratis.' Today its readers still do tarot, palm, and tea-leaf readings, and the front sells fair-trade loose teas and metaphysical gifts.
The move: Order a pot of loose tea, drink it down, then hand your cups to a reader for back-to-back tea-leaf readings.
