Entry No. 42 — the New York City file — filed under: ritual-music
Apothéke
Tucked on the crook of Doyers Street, the city's old "Bloody Angle," this bar is styled after a 19th-century Parisian absinthe den and apothecary. Bartenders in white lab coats mix drinks organized like prescriptions, from Stress Relievers to Aphrodisiacs, using house-made tinctures and infusions, and absinthe is served properly. Live jazz, brass, and burlesque rotate through most nights of the week.
The move: Sit at the marble counter, order off the "prescription" menu, and watch the lab-coated bartenders fuss over an absinthe drip together.
