Entry No. 18 — the New York City file — filed under: offbeat-museum
Mmuseumm
Housed in a former freight elevator shaft barely the size of a closet, this is one of the smallest museums on earth, devoted to ordinary 'vernacular' objects that quietly explain the modern human condition. Past displays have included toothpaste tubes from around the world, the shoe thrown at George W. Bush, and other overlooked artifacts of everyday life. The tiny door is only open seasonally (roughly Friday to Sunday, spring through fall), but when it's closed you can still peer in through viewing holes embedded in the door, day or night.
The move: Squeeze into the doorway together to study the rotating shelves of strange everyday artifacts, then debate which object told the best story over coffee nearby.
📍 Before you go Door is open weekends roughly 11am-6pm spring through early winter; otherwise view through the peepholes. Seasonal closures in deep winter.
