Sleepy Hollow Cemetery & Old Dutch Church

The 90-acre cemetery and the adjacent circa-1685 Old Dutch Church burying ground are the real-world settings of Washington Irving's 'The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,' and Irving himself is buried here under a modest headstone. The old churchyard is the storied haunt of the Headless Horseman. Two-hour evening tours guide visitors through the grounds by kerosene lantern light, past industrialists like Andrew Carnegie and William Rockefeller.

The move: Take a Saturday-night lantern tour through the gravestones and stand at the Headless Horseman Bridge site after dark.

📍 Before you go About 30 miles north of Manhattan. Evening lantern tours run Saturdays roughly May through fall and book out fast in October; reserve well ahead.
