Entry No. 47 — the New York City file — filed under: speakeasy-bar
The Office of Mr. Moto
This unmarked storefront hides a Victorian-era mailbox with a pin pad; reservation holders receive a cipher letter from the fictional Mr. Moto and must decode it to enter the passcode, at which point the opaque door window turns clear. Inside is part omakase counter, part private museum of 19th-century Japanese antiques, with a tightly curated drink and sake pairing. It is one of the hardest reservations in the city.
The move: Decode the cipher letter together at the doorstep, punch the secret code into the brass mailbox, and step into a candlelit Edomae omakase-and-sake experience.
📍 Before you go Reservation-only via Tock; seatings release the 1st of each month at 10am for the next month and sell out fast. Prix-fixe omakase ($195-225/pp), drinks paired, not a walk-in bar.
