Breaktime Bowl & Bar
Six duckpin lanes on the third floor of the old Hope Webbing mill, cut into the factory floor for its workers in the early 1900s and barely changed since. The squat pins are still set by hand between frames by human pinsetters — often local teenagers — who also roll your grapefruit-sized ball back down the return; tipping them is the custom. You get three rolls a frame, there's a full bar, and the kitchen prepares food on site with shoe rental thrown in. The story
Hope Artiste Village is the old mill complex at 999 Main Street in Pawtucket, now 127 businesses under a Santa Monica landlord, with Farm Fresh Rhode Island's indoor farmers market running Saturdays downstairs. On the third floor, behind a suite number, are six duckpin lanes. The Boston Globe reported in 2015 that the alley "hasn't changed much since it was created for workers in the early 1900s"; Breaktime itself dates the restored lanes to the 1920s. Either way, they were cut into a working factory so that mill hands could bowl on their break, which is where the name comes from.
Duckpins are squatter than candlepins and the ball is smaller than a tenpin ball, so you get three rolls a frame instead of two. Nothing here is automated. A person sits at the end of the lane, sets the pins by hand between frames and rolls your ball back down the return, and cash tips are the custom. When the Globe visited, the job belonged to Derek Laliberte, 17, on his first paycheck work - "I love this job, it's totally fun" - and Brandon Squadrito, 16, who described covering all six lanes alone as "brutal."
The catch in 2026 is that Breaktime is "open only for events." There is no walk-in bowling. The December 2025 rate sheet buys three hours of unlimited bowling with serving and bar staff, an hour to set up and an hour to break down: $650 Tuesday through Thursday, $700 Sunday, $1,099 Friday and Saturday, plus a food-and-beverage minimum of $700 Sunday-Thursday or $850 on the weekend, local meal tax and a 22 percent service fee. A $250 deposit holds the date. The kitchen cooks on site and outside catering is refused.
What it's like
You are not dropping in; you are the only party in the room, and it is yours for three hours. Someone from the staff walks you through the third-floor space, the lanes are already lit, and the shoes question never comes up because bowling shoes are not required. Bowl a frame and you will notice the rhythm is different: three rolls, small ball, and a pause while a human being reassembles the pins six feet from your face. Bring cash for them. Food arrives from the stations and buffets you picked in advance - a pretzel bar at $8 a head, a taco station at $18, open bar tiers from $32 to $42. You get an hour beforehand to decorate, but no confetti and nothing fixed to the walls, and by health code the leftovers stay behind.
The move: Round up two other couples, call 401-312-3859, and book the lanes for a private duckpin night — three rolls a frame, cash tips for the kid setting your pins, and drinks from the bar between strings.
