Entry No. 28 — the Raleigh file — filed under: underground

Foundation

Operating out of what was literally a dirt crawl space hand-excavated by the owners, this subterranean hideaway is marked only by a heavy, unmarked black metal door on Fayetteville Street. Inside, the narrow room features rugged, exposed brick and stone foundation walls, serving up an exceptional list of local North Carolina beers and custom-infused bourbon cocktails.

The move: Walk past the bustling street-level bars on Fayetteville Street, pull open the heavy black metal door, and descend the steep concrete stairs to secure a cozy corner booth surrounded by raw, historic brickwork.

Where: 213 Fayetteville St, Ste 010, Raleigh, NC 27601
