Sacramento Historic City Cemetery

Volunteer-tended roses among the finest in California bloom over ground that hides roughly 600 victims of the 1850 cholera epidemic, buried in mass graves whose exact location was never recorded — only a monument raised in 1852 marks the general area. Three California governors (Bigler, Booth, and Irwin) and Alexander Hamilton's son William are buried here, and the cemetery has a long-running reputation as one of Sacramento's most haunted sites.

The move: Walk the 44 acres at golden hour when the historic rose collection is blooming, then find the 1852 cholera monument and try to guess which unmarked patch of lawn it's actually pointing at.
