Hans Christian Andersen Museum

A free-to-browse second floor above a Danish-village bookstore holds hundreds of volumes of Hans Christian Andersen's work — including illustrated first editions — alongside dioramas of his childhood home and a scale model of 'The Princess and the Pea,' run by the nonprofit Ugly Duckling Foundation for a single author most Americans only know from cartoon adaptations.

The move: Climb the stairs above The Book Loft to read first editions and inspect the fairy-tale dioramas, then get aebleskiver downstairs in Solvang's Danish-themed downtown before the drive back.

Where: 1680 Mission Dr, Solvang, CA 93463 (upstairs at The Book Loft)

Hours: Added 2026-07-20 — confirm current hours before you go.
