Artisans at the Dahmen Barn (Fence of 1,000 Wheels)
A 1935 dairy barn in the rolling Palouse is ringed by a hand-built fence of more than a thousand salvaged wheels, from threshing-machine rims to baby-carriage casters, assembled by Steve Dahmen over roughly 30 years. The barn itself is now an artisan center with working studios, rotating exhibits and a shop of regional makers. The wheel fence is a true folk-art environment you can walk the length of, free and outdoors any time.
The move: Drive south through the wheat country, walk the full wheel fence spotting the oddest spokes, then browse the artisan studios inside.
