Caldwell Giant Ornate Box Turtle Sculptures
Caldwell's "Turtle Trail" is a self-guided walk past 12 individually painted, oversized fiberglass ornate box turtle sculptures scattered through downtown — a genuinely quirky public art project honoring the Kansas state reptile that a local sixth-grade class got enacted in 1986. The turtles have their own names and wildly different designs, and the trail doubles as a walking tour of the town's Chisholm Trail history.
The move: Pick up a free Turtle Trail map at City Hall or the Rails, Trails and Scales Visitor Center, then stroll Main Street hunting down all 12 painted turtles — photograph each one, read the placard about the sixth-graders who lobbied the legislature, and finish with a meal at one of the downtown spots before driving the short stretch of old Chisholm Trail south of town.
