Entry No. 49 — the Wichita file — filed under: college-ghost
Wilner Auditorium at Wichita State University
Theater building haunted by George Wilner, WSU's longtime speech and drama director (1923-1960), who is said to still roam the halls opening doors, checking light bulbs, and keeping his theater in order. Staff report flickering lights, disembodied voices, and a shadowy figure in the balcony.
The move: Catch an evening student performance, then linger after the house empties and watch the balcony light box for the friendly ghost said to be checking on his theater.
📍 Before you go Wilner anchors the southeast corner of the WSU campus; use the southeast entrance, where the lobby box office lives. Street-front parking is only a handful of spaces, so most people use the lots south across 17th Street or the lot just west of the building. The 553-seat hall is a working teaching theater for WSU performing arts, so your way in is a student theatre or dance production. Pair it with a pre-show wander past the campus outdoor sculpture collection and the Miro mosaic on the Ulrich Museum, a short walk away.
