Entry No. 13 — the Austin file — filed under: speakeasy

Firehouse Lounge

There's no sign on Brazos Street — the entire bar is behind a bookshelf in the lobby of a 1930s firehouse-turned-hostel, and the Austin Chronicle described it as sliding open 'like a scene in a spy movie.' The building itself dates to 1885 as Austin's oldest fire station.

The move: Walk into the hostel lobby like you're checking in, find the bookshelf, and pull it open together for the reveal — then settle into the brick-walled lounge for hand-crafted cocktails and whatever live act is booked that night (often no cover).
