Susanna Dickinson Museum

A modest 1869 rubble-rock cottage built by Joseph Hannig for his wife Susanna Dickinson — the Alamo survivor known as the "Messenger of the Alamo," who rode out from the fort's aftermath with her infant daughter to warn Sam Houston the garrison had fallen. Tucked into Brush Square a block off Sixth Street, free to enter, and easy to walk right past.

The move: Fifteen quiet minutes with period Dickinson-family artifacts a block from Sixth Street's noise, then step next door to the O. Henry Museum in the same square and argue about which building has the better ghost story.
