Entry No. 22 — the Austin file — filed under: outlaw-grave
Round Rock Cemetery (Sam Bass grave)
Outlaw Sam Bass is buried here after being shot by Texas Rangers in a downtown Round Rock gunfight on July 19, 1878 — he died two days later on his 27th birthday; his original headstone was chipped away over decades by souvenir hunters and had to be replaced, with the surviving fragments now displayed at the Round Rock Public Library. The cemetery also contains a slave burial ground and the grave of Barbette, the gender-bending 1920s–30s trapeze star.
The move: Find Bass's grave, then walk the short distance into Old Town Round Rock to the actual site of the 1878 shootout before grabbing drinks where the gunfight happened.
