Franklin Park - Overlook Shelter Ruins

Designed by Frederick Law Olmsted as a rustic field house for Franklin Park's athletic fields, the Overlook Shelter was destroyed by a fire in the 1940s. Today, the site's local Roxbury puddingstone foundations, steps, and a picturesque archway remain standing amidst the encroaching forest. In the 1960s and 70s, these ruins served as the backdrop for Elma Lewis's famous 'Playhouse in the Park' concerts, hosting legendary performers like Duke Ellington.

The move: Take a scenic stroll through Franklin Park to explore the historic stone ruins, walk through the puddingstone archway, and enjoy a quiet picnic on the grassy hillside overlooking the Playstead.
