Gene Mormino started this stand in 1946 at Polk and Western, lost the location in a card game in 1949, and rebuilt in River Grove in 1950 — which is where it has stayed, doing one thing, ever since. The menu is a hot dog, a double dog, a tamale, and fries, and the dog arrives dressed only in mustard, onions, relish and sport peppers with a fistful of fresh-cut fries dumped on top and the whole thing wrapped in paper. There is no tomato, no cucumber, no celery salt, and famously no ketchup on the premises at all; the sign out front says so in four words. There are also no seats, so the parking lot doubles as the dining room and the hood of your car doubles as the table. The story
Gene Mormino was a Chicago city worker who, the story goes, put French fries on his hot dog at a Cubs game because he wanted more salt and crunch, and then opened a stand on the idea in 1946 at Polk and Western. He lost that location in a card game in 1949. In 1950 he reopened in River Grove with his friend and coworker Jude DeSantis, in what was then a frame building, and the stand has stayed at 2720 N River Rd ever since. It is still family owned and operated, under J Mormino.
Eighty years in, the menu is a hot dog, a double dog, a tamale and fries. The dog is a Depression Dog: Vienna Beef, dressed with mustard, onions, relish and sport peppers, then buried under fresh-cut fries and wrapped in paper so the whole thing steams itself on the way to your hands. No tomato, no cucumber, no celery salt, and no ketchup anywhere on the premises — the stand's own motto is "No Seats No Ketchup, No Pretense No Nonsense," and it means all four clauses literally. Asking for ketchup is a bit, not an order.
The kitchen works nearly around the clock to keep up with itself, and the recognition has followed the narrowness rather than despite it: induction into the Vienna Beef Hot Dog Hall of Fame in 2006, and in 2011 the top spot in a national competition run by Every Day with Rachael Ray and Serious Eats, which named it the best hot dog in America. There is exactly one location and no plans visible for a second. What it's like
You order at a window, you wait a few minutes while the fry baskets keep moving behind the glass, and you are handed a paper-wrapped bundle that is hot dog and fries in the same package rather than side by side. Then you look around for somewhere to eat it and discover there isn't anywhere — no tables, no stools, no dining room. Everyone stands at a counter ledge or leans on a car in the lot, which is a large part of why the place feels the way it does at midnight. Order for the format: fries come on the dog by default, so a double dog and one shared order of fries feeds two people without duplication. Don't ask for ketchup, don't expect the full Chicago dressing, and eat it standing while it's still hot, because the fries lose the plot fast.
The move: Drive out after a late movie or a show, order two double dogs and one order of fries to split around 11:30pm, and eat them standing at the counter ledge while the fry baskets keep going behind the glass — then finish in the car with the windows down.

How do I get there?
2720 N River Rd in River Grove, about 25 minutes northwest of the Loop by car. Transit is awkward enough that driving is the honest answer, and there is a lot — which doubles as the seating.
How late is it open?
10:30am to 1am Sunday through Thursday, and to 2am Friday and Saturday. The late window is most of the appeal. Hours are posted as temporary on their site, so call 708-452-7634 if you're making a special trip.
Is there anywhere to sit?
No. None. There is a counter ledge to stand at and a parking lot. In January that is a real consideration; plan to eat in the car.
Can I get ketchup?
They don't stock it. The sign says so in four words. This is not a negotiation, and the counter has heard the joke.
What should I order?
A hot dog or a double dog, both of which arrive with fresh-cut fries piled on top under the wrapper. There are also tamales and a standalone order of fries. That's the menu — it hasn't needed expanding since 1946.
