Entry No. 51 — the Coeur d'Alene file — filed under: outdoor-weird
Crystal Peak Lookout
A 1950s fire lookout cabin perched about 24 feet up, relocated to a ridge outside Fernwood and converted by tiny-house builder Kristie Wolfe into a glass-walled cabin you can rent for the night. It sleeps two in a queen bed surrounded by 360-degree windows, with a small kitchenette inside (sink, burner, wood stove) and a composting outhouse a few steps away. There's no light pollution out here, so the star views are the whole point. Getting up the steep final dirt driveway takes four-wheel drive.
The move: Book a clear-sky night, haul groceries up the mountain, and cook dinner in the tower as the sun sets through the wraparound windows, then stay up stargazing from the catwalk.
📍 Before you go About a 2-hour drive from Coeur d'Alene near Fernwood; advance booking required and it sells out fast. The final 4.5-mile dirt road plus steep quarter-mile driveway needs four-wheel drive; no running water (composting outhouse).
