Coeur d'Alene's Old Mission State Park (Cataldo Mission)

The Mission of the Sacred Heart, built between 1850 and 1853 by Coeur d'Alene tribal members and Jesuit missionaries, is the oldest standing building in Idaho, raised without nails using wooden pegs and a ceiling stained blue with hand-pressed huckleberries. The grounds hold two cemeteries and a restored parish house, the original of which burned in 1887. It is a National Historic Landmark and the most visited heritage park in the state.

The move: Drive out to the bluff above the river, tour the nail-free 1850s mission, then walk the two old cemeteries on the grounds at dusk.

📍 Before you go About 25 miles east of CDA off I-90; Idaho state park day-use fee applies and the visitor center has its own seasonal hours.
