The Snake Pit (Enaville Resort)
Built in 1880 at the fork of the Coeur d'Alene River, this is billed as Idaho's oldest restaurant, and over 140 years it's been a boomtown bar, railroad layover, hotel, and house of ill repute. The nickname comes from a former owner who reportedly kept rattlesnakes in a pit out front for entertainment. The interior is a taxidermy-and-memorabilia time capsule: deer and bear trophies, century-old mining and logging gear, and walls plastered with signs, photos, and bumper stickers.
The move: Make the riverside drive up from Kingston for an early dinner of the famous prime rib or buffalo burgers, then take a slow walk along the North Fork of the Coeur d'Alene River afterward.
