James 'Bucks' Burnett — the man behind the world's first 8-track museum — runs what the Dallas Observer calls the city's secret, by-appointment-only record shop: no sign, no posted address, no regular hours, cash only. Burnett, who has worked at 20+ record stores since 1976, modeled it on the below-board, members-only headshops and underground dance clubs of his youth, and insists that if you book an appointment, you buy at least one record.
The move: Talk your way into an appointment, then spend an hour letting a 40-year Dallas music lifer hand-pick avant-garde, free jazz, and art-rock out of a stash no algorithm will ever show you — the buy-at-least-one rule guarantees you each leave with a souvenir.
