Beth Olem Cemetery

This historic Jewish cemetery, dating back to the 1860s, was completely swallowed by a massive General Motors assembly plant and is now only accessible to the public twice a year.

The move: Plan a rare date around Passover or Rosh Hashanah to pass through GM security gates and leave a traditional pebble on the 19th-century headstones amidst the hum of factory machinery.

Where: Smith Street, Hamtramck, MI 48211
