Frances Canyon Ruins

Dating back to the early 18th century, this remarkably preserved Navajo defensive site was built to protect the Diné people from Spanish and Ute raiders. The sandstone complex once contained roughly 40 rooms, including a prominent three-story stone tower perched dramatically on a canyon rim. Visitors can still see intact wooden roof beams, Spanish-style hooded fireplaces, and ancient rock art surrounding the ruins.

The move: Take a scenic, rugged drive up Frances Mesa to hike the short trail to the ruins, where you can photograph the ancient stone tower and read the educational plaques together.
