Aztec Ruins National Monument

Aztec Ruins National Monument preserves a massive 12th-century Ancestral Puebloan community that was mistakenly named by 19th-century settlers who assumed the Aztecs built it. The site features the remains of Aztec West, a three-story great house that once contained over 500 rooms, and a fully reconstructed Great Kiva. Visitors can walk through original doorways and see 900-year-old wooden roof beams still intact.

The move: Stroll along the half-mile self-guided trail to admire the ancient masonry, then step inside the reconstructed Great Kiva to experience its impressive acoustics and quiet, sacred atmosphere.
