Beyond the Big Sky at Montana Learning Center Observatory
Perched above Canyon Ferry Lake, the Montana Learning Center runs the largest public-access observatory complex in the northwestern U.S., a three-dome cluster called the Mike and Lynn Rice Astronomical Park housing five telescopes. One dome holds a 32-inch view-only scope, the largest publicly accessible telescope in Montana. On one weekend a month from June through September, the public is let in at sunset for an astronomer's talk followed by guided peeks through the big glass, with Helena Astronomical Society volunteers working the eyepieces (100 spots a night, tickets required). The 2026 lineup includes James Manning, former head of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, on "Native Skies, Native Stories" in June, and Mars Society observatory director Peter Detterline on the Moon and Venus in July.
The move: Drive out to Canyon Ferry at dusk, catch the astronomer's talk, then take turns staring at Saturn's rings through Montana's biggest telescope.
📍 Before you go Tickets run about $25 adult / $15 youth; only open to the public one weekend a month, June-September, weather permitting.
