Entry No. 32 — the Houston file — filed under: hidden upstairs bar

Refuge

Up a back staircase above Anvil Bar & Refuge sits a 50-person room lit mostly by table lamps, centered on a replica of the neon sign from Havana's famous Floridita bar. It's the space that succeeded the old hidden Tongue-Cut Sparrow above the same building, run by the same Bobby Heugel team with brass ice buckets and glassware imported from four countries.

The move: Head to Anvil first for a drink at the main bar, then take the back staircase up to Refuge for a second, quieter round under the Floridita neon — walk-ins are usually workable but the room only seats about 50.
