The Mantis at Downtown Container Park

A 40-foot steel praying mantis — originally built as a Burning Man art car — now perches permanently over a shopping center assembled from stacked shipping containers, spewing real fire from its antennae and playing music through seven speakers while an operator runs it from a hidden compartment inside.

The move: Eat at one of the container restaurants, then linger near sunset for a drum circle to "wake" the mantis and watch it breathe fire before riding the giant slide inside the park.
