Workman & Temple Family Homestead Museum (El Campo Santo)

A genuine hidden gem the Smithsonian called one of California's true historic treasures, this free museum centers on the 1840s Workman House and the lavish 1920s Spanish Colonial Revival mansion La Casa Nueva. On the grounds sits El Campo Santo, a private 1850s cemetery just under an acre, where a Neoclassical marble mausoleum stands behind an intricate Gothic-revival cast-iron fence. Here Pio Pico, the last governor of Mexican California, lies near oil-fortune patriarch Walter P. Temple, who was finally re-interred at the family plot in 2002. Free guided tours run Friday through Sunday.

The move: Catch the free Friday-Sunday guided tour of La Casa Nueva, then wander the self-guided path through El Campo Santo cemetery to the Temple mausoleum and koi pond.

📍 Before you go Admission and tours are free; house tours run Fri-Sun at set times except the 4th weekend of the month. Reservations recommended for the guided house tours.
