Deering Estate — Tequesta Burial Mound & Cutler Fossil Site

A five-foot-high prehistoric mound on the estate grounds holds the remains of 12 to 18 Native Americans from the Glades II-III periods and has been repeatedly dug into by treasure hunters since the 1860s; a few hundred feet away, a 1979 sinkhole excavation turned up Ice Age animal bones intermingled with roughly 10,000-year-old human tool marks — among the oldest evidence of people in South Florida.

The move: Follow the boardwalk out to the burial mound and the fenced-off fossil sinkhole before touring Charles Deering's 1922 Mediterranean-style house, then watch the sun drop over Biscayne Bay from the seawall.
