Renwick Smallpox Hospital Ruin

NYC's only landmarked ruin: a Gothic Revival stone hospital designed in 1856 by James Renwick Jr. (architect of St. Patrick's Cathedral) to isolate smallpox victims. Now a roofless shell of ivy-laced granite walls held up by scaffolding, fenced off but fully visible at the southern tip of Roosevelt Island. You reach it via the Roosevelt Island Tram gliding over the East River, then walk through Southpoint Park and FDR Four Freedoms Park to the ruin's edge.

The move: Ride the aerial tram over the river, then walk to the fenced edge of the floodlit Gothic ruin at golden hour for an eerie, romantic backdrop.

📍 Before you go The ruin is fenced and viewable from outside only (no entry). Best reached via the Roosevelt Island Tram or F train; the adjacent FDR Four Freedoms Park has its own hours.

Where: Southpoint, Roosevelt Island, New York, NY 10044
