Langston's Western Wear (haunted second floor)
“cold hands shoved her down the stairs”
This working cowboy-boot-and-hat emporium has anchored Stockyards City since 1913, but its 1919 building was originally a dance hall and bar downstairs with a hotel above. Local lore says it's haunted by two taxi-dancer sisters from the 1920s-30s, Patty and Rose: Patty was shot by a jealous boyfriend in what is now the children's and women's boots section, and Rose then hanged herself in an upstairs room. Staff report lights flipping on and off, an unseen presence trailing them on the second floor, and one employee claimed cold hands shoved her down the stairs.
The move: Go boot-shopping as cover, then dare each other to climb to the second floor and linger at the foot of the stairs where employees describe a wave of dread; compare notes over a steak afterward in the surrounding Stockyards.
📍 Before you go Langston's sits in the heart of Stockyards City, a compact, walkable stretch of red-brick storefronts along Exchange Avenue with free street parking usually right out front. Treat it as a genuine working boot-and-hat store, not a haunted attraction: the second floor isn't a public browsing area, so you'll need to politely ask a sales associate to walk you up — staff are used to the request. Daytime is essentially your only window, since it keeps regular retail hours. Make a Stockyards afternoon of it; the saddle and leather shops, the old-fashioned Stockyards Sarsaparilla soda fountain, and Cattlemen's Steakhouse (slinging steaks since 1910) are all a short stroll away.
