Casa Grande Ruins National Monument

Built in the 14th century by the Ancestral Sonoran Desert (Hohokam) people, this prehistoric farming community was abandoned around 1450 CE. The centerpiece of the site is the 'Great House,' a massive four-story structure constructed of caliche mud that is now protected under a landmark steel canopy. Visitors can also see the remnants of surrounding compound walls and ancient irrigation canals that once sustained the village.

The move: Take a self-guided walk along the paved interpretive trail to photograph the towering Great House, then explore the visitor center's museum exhibits to learn about the ancient Hohokam canal system.

📍 Before you go The site is a federally protected National Monument managed by the National Park Service, open daily to the public with paved trails surrounding the ruins.
